excursion tour from cruise ship in Piraeus

I would like a recommendation for an excursion tour to Athens from someone with experience.

The cruise line has no offering?

How long do you have? ( how long is the ship in port?)

What do you want to see?

Any physical limitations?

What are you interested in seeing? Museums, sites like the Acropolis, some of the ancient churches, some of the sites outside Athens? How long to you have ashore? Unless you want to be a pier runner, take an excursion offered by cruise line; the ship will wait for excursions offered by cruise companies that are delayed by traffic etc., but not for others. Unfortunately cruise tours tend to be more expensive and may not give you much time or visit sites you want to see. If you want to arrange a private tour contact Fantasy Travel in Athens, they will arrange something for you…or see if they offer a tour that appeals. Just make sure they know your time constraints re ship departure.

We have one day. I am waiting to see which Viking excursions are available when we are allowed to select. We do want to walk up to the Acropolis and 2 out of those are filled/no longer available. My husband and I are both able to walk up to the Acropolis. Thanks for asking.

Thank you. Fantasy Tours are not one that comes up as a possibility. Have you had experience with them? If we do a half day tour, we should be fine.

We just did Athens and toured around before our cruise.

1. Depends on where your hotel is, but if you are in the Placka, a lot of things are easy walking distance.
2. Athens is a good uber town. We got a ride from our hotel in the Placka to the Port for E20. Not bad.

3. Rick Steves walk is good to familiarize yourself with Athens.

4. We used the subway from the airport into town. While busy, it was easy and cheap.

Enjoy Athens!

Great to know that Uber works well in Athens. I have been studying Rick Steve's Pocket Athens. So glad you had a great time in Athens. If you hiked to the top of the Acropolis, how strenuous would you say it was? Thanks so much.

Private drivers without a taxi driver's license are prohibited in Greece, by taking an Uber you will have a traditional taxi (yellow cars) using the Uber application.

Taking a taxi from the cruise terminal will get you close to the entrance to the Acropolis in about 30 minutes.

The climb to the Acropolis hill is not particularly difficult. It can be slippery in rainy weather, but it's mainly the heat that can turn your visit into a kind of hell.

Bring water!

If you only have one day and may not ever return to Athens I’d consider hiring a private driver. We used Dimitris Roussos of drpremiumtaxi.com last summer. He is a wonderful gentleman and it was a pleasure spending time with him. He’ll take you right to the major sites, no guessing where the entrance is, you spend as much time as you like and he’s right there to pick you up when you’re done. We visited the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum (use Rick’s guides/maps), Temple of Zeus, Olympic stadium, Syntagma Square and the changing of the guard, had a nice lunch and spent the afternoon at the Archeology Museum (we like museums but also could consider the Agora). The nice thing about a private driver is you decide what you want to see and how much time you spend at each sight. We were on a cruise that ended in Athens and a also used him to go to Delphi the next day.

What a wonderful suggestion. I had been thinking about an excursion from the ship, but I will check out a taxi service. Thanks
