We are planning to book Acropolis tickets for May 2026 when they become available on the Hellenic Heritage site. We have been warned not to pay more for other vendors touting "skip the line" benefits. Is there much of a wait to get through the gate if you have a time-entry ticket? Also, which gate is preferred. We've read the South gate is less crowded but is there any advantage to using the main West gate?
Honestly, it depends on how many others have purchased tickets for the same time slot. We have been to the Acropolis three separate times. Twice we used the south entrance, once the main entrance. I would recommend using the south entrance. I would not recommend paying extra for a skip the line ticket.
One of our entrances through the south entrance was in December and the other was in July. We didn't have a wait either time. They were enforcing the time on the tickets. A couple was walking in front of us and entered the gates to have their tickets scanned, and the worker turned them away because they were early for their time slot. There was no one in line, but they weren't allowed to enter.
At the main entrance we had to wait in line. The main entrance has more steps that are more "standard" than the south slope entrance, so if you have any mobility problems, that may be a better entrance for you. If you do end up using the main entrance, be sure to walk around the south slope to see all the other things there.
The South Entrance is at the very bottom of the Acropolis and is a longer walk to the top and steep in places.
I've used both entrances and the main entrance is easier walking on mostly paved paths slightly steep in places but not to bad.
The best time to enter is at opening, 8 a.m. and second best is later in the afternoon.
I went before the new time entrance requirements so can't say how that works out.
Pick the entrance that’s most convenient for you, whether it’s the main one or the side entrance. There’s really no reason to walk an extra 10 minutes to reach the other entrance just to possibly save a few minutes
If you’re also planning to visit the Acropolis Museum, the side entrance is just a short walk away, which might influence your decision.
As I often say, the Acropolis has been waiting for you for 2,500 years. A few extra minutes won’t make a difference, it’ll still be there when you arrive.
Thank you so much for the responses. they were very helpful and we have a plan and can chill. We'll get tickets for either right at 8am or maybe 4 or 5 pm. Have to check in with our travel buddies. South gate without a skip the line should work well for us. Love the perspective. You're right, I don't think the Acropolis is going anywhere soon.
GLad you have a plan. and BTW, lots of people have wrong impression about "skip the line" benefits, perhaps from experience in Rome or Paris or wherever, when this feature zips you ahead of Everyone!. The Greece "skip the line" come-on from an agency, is actually only saving you standing in line at the ticket booth, to BUY a ticket (because the Agency buys your ticket ahead).... but if there is a long line of ticket-holders waiting to have their ticket punched/taken at the entry gate, you STILL will have to stand in that line. Another reason to either plan to be an early-early bird, or a late-day visitor.
A reminder from the Greek Ministry of Culture regarding "skip the line" tickets
