driver vs guide in Greece

I have been looking for a private tour in Athens and i got some suggestions on this site, but i am a little confused with a difference between the driver and a guide. Most tour operators offering tours with a driver who is knowledgeable but can't go anywhere with us and if i want an actual guide then i have to pay extra. Anyone had any experience with a "driver", is it worth it... i am not sure if i can afford a driver and a guide. appreciate any feedback.

Not Greece, but experience in a number of Asian destinations.

Many countries have licensing requirements for guides. The guide will have demonstrated basic knowledge, passed tests, met whatever requirements are mandated. You would receive background info, historical significance, anecdotes , etc about the venue - think group “guided tour”, but for your party alone.

Privately hired “outside” guides may or may not be allowed inside a venue - museum, historical or archeological site - to direct clients. That depends on the rules of the venue. It would be possible to hire a licensed guide who can take you to the door, explain the significance of a spot, suggest ways to visit, but is not allowed to escort and guide you inside. You would need to clarify this before deciding on guide services - don’t just assume a guide will be with you throughout all your touring.

A driver (unless designated “driver/guide”) is unlikely to give you info - at least at the level of a professional guide. I have had a few drivers discuss life in the city/country - schooling, family relationships, heath care, etc- or point out spots that I might wish to explore alone, but I have also had drivers with very little English. We communicated with a lot of Google translate and pointing to photos of desired venues.

My personal preference is always driver only. That is because I do a lot of research before traveling and know what and why I wish to visit a spot. I typically know the route and stops I want also. Not everyone has the time or inclination for this. I do agree, having driver only saves me money!

In Athens, you don't need a driver. You'll waste your time and money hiring one, because most of the sites can be explored on foot within a limited area and only licensed guides are authorized to accompany you as guides to archaeological sites and museums (they have free access).

If you're looking for an official, licensed guide, there's a website with their contact information.

If you don't need more in-depth information and don't plan on asking questions, some places offer free audio guides.
There's also a free audio guide for the Acropolis, Ancient Agora and National Archaeological Museum on this website:
