Discounts on domestic flights in Greece

For those who might want to book domestic flights in Greece in 2026, Sky Express, the second largest Greek airline, is currently offering up to 50% off on some flights. (Especially, from what I've seen, on the first or last flights of the day.)

I have no commercial relationship with Sky Express.

Also, keep an eye on the Aegean website's "Flight Deals" page and expect, as every year, discounts on Black Friday. Usually up to 60%, or even 70%. This offer is usually only valid for 24 hours.

The "Black Friday" sales from Aegean Airlines is usually 3 days.

That's right, but be aware that the discount usually decreases over time (up to 70% on the first day, 50% on the third day).

Just got the email for the Aegean sale but according to the website I only have 7 hours left to book!

This was the message I saw as of 11/28 (morning in the USA)

⌛️Start booking now! This offer lasts for TODAY (Nov. 28) ONLY.⌛️

After checking on several flights still more than I want to pay.

However, Sky Express has much lower prices (even before the sale) and their sale lasts longer:

This is what SE says on their website:

Book by 1/12/2025

Prices much lower for SE but you need to be fully aware of the luggage and carrier on weights and sizes as they are not as generous as Aegean!

Tommy that sale was on Black Friday in Greek time. I tried getting tickets when it started around 3 pm Denver time yesterday and couldn’t get through … server was overwhelmed. There was a countdown clock on the Aegean website and I suspect lots of people were trying to grab those big discounts. I finally got through around 5 pm Denver time and saved about 25%, so that was worthwhile, but 70% would have been more fun!

I received the email from Aegean at 3:00 AM (Greek time). From 9:00 AM (Greek time) the website was overloaded.

As mentioned above, Aegean's Black Friday discount lasts for 3 days, but it decreases on the second and third days.
Obviously, the discounts are "up to," so you don't win every time.

Regarding luggage, the carry-on size on all domestic flights operated by Aegean/Olympic on ATR42 or 72 turboprops cannot exceed 55cm x 40cm x 23cm , instead of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm on Airbus aircraft.

Sky Express does not apply this limitation; I believe it's because they have new generation ATR 72-600s with a cabin configuration that has larger overhead compartments.

https://www.atr-aircraft.com/aircraft-services/aircraft-family/atr-72-600/

However, the maximum weight for carry-on baggage on both airlines is 8 kg in Economy class. I'm not talking about small hand luggage that can be placed under the seat (whose maximum dimensions are generally 40×30×15 cm).

For checked baggage on Aegean/Olympic, in Economy class, the maximum weight is 23 kg, while Sky Express offers two options: 15 kg and 23 kg.

With Sky Express, it's possible to choose the 15 kg option and upgrade later to 23 kg for a small additional fee, for example if your luggage weighs more than you anticipated when booking.

Sorry for giving the measurements in metric units, it's easy to convert them online.

We persevered through the server problems on Aegean (the sale started at 1 pm Thursday in Alaska) and got the flights we wanted. Since we had 4 separate flights both of us logged on. It was crazy, sometimes we couldn't get on and sometimes we made it to checking out before we'd lose the connection to the website.

We needed to fly from Athens to Crete, Crete to Rhodes and Rhodes to Athens. Also Athens to Zagreb. The 4 flights had differing discounts but we saved a good amount. I just took a look today and the discounts aren't as good, so it was worth the hassle of trying to buy with all the server issues.

We got in on this too, to a minor extent.

I had already booked our outbound flights weeks ago, departing Santorini, via Athens, then onward to Tbilisi (don't ask, it's complicated), flying on Aegean. I had booked that flight with points, but just for grins I wanted to check and see if the cost had gone down much given the "black Friday sale". If it did, I figured I could cancel my existing booking and then rebook at the black Friday price. But when I checked, the price for the flights I had booked had not gone down - it had actually gone up (and by quite a bit). Go figure. So I didn't touch my original booking which was at a pretty decent price.

Then I moved on to an inter-island leg that I had penciled in, which was not yet booked: Rhodes to Heraklion. Both Aegean and SkyExpress fly this route. Aegean goes in the morning (SkyExpress in the evening) which is what I wanted. The black Friday price was indeed lower than what I had seen previously (and was a relative bargain compared to paying for the flight with points). So I booked that, and saved almost a hundred bucks. A big, green checkmark goes next to that item on my to-do list for next September's trip.

I ran into some weird IT glitchiness as I was going through the booking process, so it seems their servers are still getting hammered. I got it done but had to re-try several steps to make it stick.

Thanks for bringing this sale to our attention. Now, back to the leftovers...
