Sorry, I don’t know about Rethymno dining as we stay in Chania.

We had a lovely dinner on a private balcony at Achinos near the harbor but forgot the cardinal rule of ordering fish in Greece: verify the price first. It was our first night & we were jet lagged ... so ended up paying 120 euros for a dinner that was OK but not spectacular. I don't think we paid more than 40 euros for dinner for the rest of our month in Crete. Plus the service was awful. We think the waiter forgot we were there. When we finally we got the check we took it downstairs to pay, rather than wondering if the waiter would ever return. The hostess took our credit card, turned the i-pad around for us to add a tip, we added zero, and she glared at us. So be careful if you go there.

Actually our best food in Rethymno were the gyros at a little place just down the street from our hotel (the Astali) (not the one on the corner).

Our most fun in Rethymno (if you're looking for ideas) was an ATV Safari, through a tourist agency called Get Your Trip. These are two-passenger ATVs, and our little group (maybe 10 ATVs?) were guided through the countryside around Rethymno, with stops at a little cafe for coffee, and in a scenic little town, and on a gorgeous hillside for lunch. We were by far the oldest (at 80 & 78) but had a great time and felt perfectly safe.

So..... "We had a lovely dinner on a private balcony at Achinos ........"

It sounds like a place to stay away from except perhaps for the "lovely balcony."

Yes — I guess that’s what I was saying. It’s a very popular place that was highly recommended, with a gorgeous view, but some downsides to be aware of.

Hi Nicholas, have a look at 'the greek cook out' in Kissamos for a great Cretan buffet and plate smashing. We hd a great time there last year!
