Delphi Area - how many days?

We are planning a trip to Greece in September (just bought our airline tickets!) and I'm nor refining our itinerary. We will be in mainland Greece for 3 weeks and Crete for a week, are interested in history, food and, yes, a vacation (i.e., hiking, swimming and enjoying being away). We would like to enjoy the country and the people and not simply focus on a pilgrimage to the archaeological sites. After arriving from the US, we will pause for a day or two at either Sounio or Rafina to get over jet lag (we're in our 70s and don't recover as quickly as we once did) and then head towards Delphi -

Thus far, I have -

Galaxidi. 4 nites -
Day 1. Drive from Athens area via Itea (3 plus hours), stopping at Hosios Loukas Monastery and Distomo en route.
Question - is the (backroad) Itea route reasonably easy to drive or are we better off using the larger highways?

Day 2. Delphi (archaeological sites. and museum) and Amfissa OR Vagonetto for the Fokis Mining Park. note -- we have been to FDelphi before so I am only plotting a morning there.
Question - thoughts on Amfissa vs Vagonetto for the Fokis Mining Park???

Day 3. Cooking class and visit Galaxidi (churches and Nautical and Historical Museum) OR hike Parnassus/walk on the coastal road of Galaxidi to the pine forest of Kentri, the coast of Oianthi and the picturesque port of Chirolakas. OR drive to Nafpaktos.

Day 4. Leivadia (springs, castle, ethnological museum, souvlaki lunch), Chaironea (battlefield and museum) and/or Orchomenos (Ancient Mycenaean Tholos tomb and Theatre) and/or go to the beach at Itea or Antikyra.
Question- are these three towns/sites worth visiting or which might be more interesting if you had to choose?

Good ideas? Bad ideas? Is this reasonable or should I add more time?

Thank you so much!!

This is a thought on one small piece of your itinerary. We really enjoyed staying in Galaxidi and did a daytrip from there to visit Delphi. The Nautical Museum was interesting, we did some hikes in the area and our stay at the Ganimede Hotel was really nice. They were so kind there and breakfasts were delicious. Since there are things there that are of interest to you in Galaxidi anyway, you might consider a night or two there.

You did exactly what we are thinking of doing - including staying at the Ganimede!~. Looks like I may be on the right track. Thank you!

That all sounds great. I envy you the trip!

This is another thought rather than a comment on what you’ve got so far. Have you considered returning from Galaxidi via the Rio-Antirio bridge?

Assuming you have the time - I think you said you’d got a month in all? - you could then
a) visit Voudeni, a relatively newly opened site with a number of Mycenae tombs

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycenaean_cemetery_of_Voudeni

b) stop at Diakofto for the rack and pinion railway

https://www.trainose.gr/en/tourism-culture/train-and-recreation/the-rack-railway/

(It’s closed at the moment for Covid but will presumably reopen once things are safe.)

It sounds like you enjoy the planning so these are a couple more things to throw into the mix!

PS we did this journey in reverse - Diakofto, Patras, Nafpaktos, back via Delphi - on our last trip and really enjoyed it. We’re in our late 60s and enjoy a slower pace!

We'd not considered it (but my husband would enjoy this detour) but I will now and re-craft a bit. The current plan is -- Cape Sounmion, Galaxidi, Olympia, Nafplion - Crete -- but everything is flexible as I've not yet made any hotel arrangements. And - you're right - I enjoy the planning almost as much as the trip!!

If you do decide to go to Diakofto we stayed in The Alkistis, which we liked. Nothing special but lathe rooms, cheap and friendly people. They have a small pool and are 2 minutes from the beach. For some reason Google maps has the wrong website listed, but the rest of the details are right

I don't think that we will be near Diakofto this trip - but I will happily add it to our next one. Thank you!!

For what it’s worth, I always love going to Thermopylae as a day/half day trip out of Delphi. If you haven’t been there’s a center with a fabulously terrible 3D screen reenactment, the monuments and battle field, and the springs themselves are accessible for bathing. Also some small monasteries on the pretty drive there over the mountains.
