Dec Drive conditions Athens->Delphi->Peloponnese

Hello,

We are planning on visiting historic sites, countryside and hiking trails between Dec 26 and Jan 3.

Flying into Athens and then considering renting a car to drive to Delphi, Olympia, Nafplio, Epidavros, Mycenae.

If you have visited those areas in late Dec or live there, what can one typically expect in terms of winter driving conditions on that route during that time ? Frequently snowy roads at high elevations or is that pretty rare ?

Our present plan: Routes 44,48 Athens to Delphi...E65, E55 to Olympia...E55,E65,7 to Mycenae Nafplio area.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I did this trip in early December and it was fine. You might get rain but snow would be rare. The weather was mild and chilly for the most part.

This is off season so expect fewer restaurants and hotels to be open and limited hours for museums and sites. And of course short daylight hours.

To legally drive in Greece you must have an International Drivers Permit to go along with your US state issued license (assuming you are a US citizen). In my experience rental agencies do check.

Thanks Douglas. I did not know about the International driving permit. I will be sure to get that.
We will pack for chilly conditions and hope for the best.
We will be done with the circuit in Nafplio on the 1st noon and wondering what to do till our flight out to Rome on 2nd night.
We will still have our car with us. Any ideas ? Considering Hydra but it could be a hassle with limited ferry schedules.
Thanks again.

When you say "done with the circuit in Nafplio" what exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean you will have just arrived in Nafplio noon on the first Of Jan?? And you want to buzz out of there in a matter of hours, and try to go to an Island/?? No no no no. Nafplio can easily occupy you for 4 days! Why not hang out there & see what citizens consider the Most BEautiful Old Town in all of Greece. This wonderful (noncommercial) site http://www.visitnafplio.com will show you its highlights ... central square, castle atop the town... Palamidi Fortress (drive up the back way for BEST photo ops imaginable) ... It's the favorite weekend getaway for savvy Athenians, but since you're coming in on Sunday, you can score a great room overlooking the sea (Hotel Agammemnon) ... See the great little museum on the square on Sunday (open until 3pm) ... browse the chic shops (I never shop in Athens for mementos, Nafplio is THE best for wonderful small items) ... enjoy a pre-prandial drink at the seafront, IMHO best sunsets in greece. Lots of enjoyable tavernas for dinner. Monday, you can drive EAST to Epidaurus (it's open Mondays), then drive up COAST road to Corinith, hop off at canal (exit "Isthmia") to see amazing canal (so skinny, so deep), have late lunch, then proceed to airport.

Janet, Thanks for your response.
What I left out of my post was that we arrive into Nafplio to check into our hotel on Dec 30 and we check out on Jan 1. That gives us 2 nights and almost 3 full days in that area.
We are looking forward to the non-commercial ambience of that area. We would have visited Athens for 2 full days at the start of our trip on Dec 26th and 27th then spent a night in Delphi on 28th, a night in Olympia on the 29th.
Wondering if we should head back to Athens on the 1st and visit more places there before our 9:40 pm flight out on the 2nd.
Or just stay put in Nafplio for a third night and explore the surroundings.
Your post makes me want to do the latter.
Thanks again.

We're often in Nafplio in late December and the weather can be very changeable. Last year it was sunny and we swam most days, but that was exceptional! We've never seen snow there but have had sleight. I'd recommend layers.

I agree with Janet that it is well worth the extra day.

Have a great trip.
