We are flying from the U.S. to Larnaca with a connection in Heathrow and am interested in where passport control and customs with occur. Particularly, must we retrieve our bags at Heathrow for this (sure hope not).

As long as your flights are on one ticket and your checked bags are checked through to Cyprus, you won't have to go through Passport Control and Customs until you reach Cyprus. In Heathrow, you can stay airside, and only go through security. Look at the Heathrow airport website under the Connections section.
Super! Thanks much for the info. We are a tad pressed for time and hopping for a shower at Heathrow.

That is the key issue.
The only 1 stop Atlanta to Larnaca via London I could find is on BA with ~7 hrs at LHR. Thus I find OP's comment of being 'pressed for time' puzzling. Leaves m wondering if OP has a single ticket trip. ( I didn't dig until the shovel broke so maybe there is something OP has that I didn't find)
It is a single ticket, arrive from PHI at 6:40, departing 9:05 on BA. Thanks for the concern.
If planning to grab a shower in transit (eg in a business class lounge), then that's not an excess of time - the showers do get busy (understandably so, it's nice to get a refresh after the overnight flight). Waste no time, go straight to the lounge, get in your request for a shower as soon as you can, then wait until your turn comes up. It's a good way to utilize your ~2 hours waiting for your connection, and you'll feel better upon arrival in your destination.
