In my opinion, 6 days in Dubrovnik is 3-4 days too many. There are some good day trips you can do from Dubrovnik if you are really wanting to stay there for 6 days, but I think you'd be better off staying a couple of nights in Mostar or Kotor or one of the islands off the Dalmatian coast. Since you already lots of island time in Greece, I'd recommend Mostar. Or even Sarajevo. You could do a few days in Sarajevo and stop in Mostar on your way to Dubrovnik. Split would be another option. And Plitvice Lakes would be a nice overnight getaway.

How are you getting from Dubrovnik to Santorini? Have you found decent flight connections? Ground transportation from Croatia to Greece would be quite the adventure.

There aren't any direct flights from Dubrovnik to Greece. We have looked over the years. You have to fly through Frankfurt, or Zagreb/Munich, etc.

There now are direct flights from Dubrovnik to Athens. They may not operate every day in the off season. See www.skyscanner.com. There are no simple overland nor ferry options.

Yes, this trip sounds easy, but it will be a logistical headache.

And (I know I sound like a broken record, repeating and repeating) why why do people always say Santorini-Mykonos as if they are Conjoined Twins?? Is it because they only know those 2 names because of lack of research and those 2 names are the only ones that are endlessly promoted by Cruise lines and US package-tour operators???

Fact: both islands are so heavily touristic that first-time visitors will not experience much "Greekness". In Santorini, waiters at popular spots typically are from the Balkans. Fact: these are the 2 costliest places in Greece, if that matters. Fact: due to docking of at least 3 (sometimes 5) huge mega-cruise ships during weekdays, from May thru Sept as many as 10,000 cruisers can pour daily onto these islands from 9 -5, jamming shopping lanes, cafes etc. Fact: travel agents get bigger commissions from luxury bookings, so they push isles with more upscale fancy resorts to appeal to affluent travelers. Fact: a reason these isles are relentlessly publicized is that there are only 5 ports in the entire Aegean deep enough to accommodate those monster-ships, so cruise lines must promote the idea that these stops are must-sees.

That being said, Santorini certainly has that dramatic clifftop Caldera View famous on calendars and in videos ... and Mykonos is renowned for beach and club partying (at least in high summer), but perhaps if a newcomer chose one, and then selected another nearby island, with less package-tourism influence, he or she might get a broader experience of Greece.

Janet--- thank you for the illuminating/educational post ( Not taking any prisoners today?)

Will try to retain this in the memory cells if we ever get a chance to return to Greece. Did the RS Greece tour and enjoyed our short time on Hydra.

Joann-- I have not researched what Dubrovnik has to offer but if possible, I would add another day or 2 to Athens ( unless you have been there before)

I have found flights from Dbv to santorini either thru Athens or Rome both are about 5 hrs ... I must go to santorini but would choose another island instead of Mykonos suggestions for 3 nights

Consider Naxos. I liked it on a (much earlier) visit, and it continues to receive positive comments here.

Glad to know there are now direct flights to Athens from Dubrovnik. We have friends there and in the past have not been able to meet up.

Such good advice here. After our RS tour this past Sept. we spent 4 nights on Santorini and 6 nights on Naxos. We liked Santorini but loved Naxos! We thank our friend Janet for her recommendations.

Joann, if you want hotel suggestions, there are various location options, and advice may differ depending on what time of Year. A location may be quite different in early june vs. late july, vs. mid-september. Please give dates you'll be in Naxos. Also helps to know a bit more about you -- are there 2 of you or 6? Are you midlife, or retirees, interested in nightlife, hiking, etc, or mainly relaxing on beach? Also, can you give preferred budget range per night (naxos will be about 30-40% below santorini hotels on caldera side).
