I really want to underline the fact that Athens is really safe compared to a lot of major cities. I’ve been dozens of times without any problems.
Having said that I thought people might be interested in this story.
As usual the advice is to take sensible precautions as you would anywhere.

"Mugging," really? This article is about a pickpocket ring. But the news item calls it "mugging." Where I come from, mugging is (was) a strongarm robbery or worse. As Alan knows well, violent crime is rare in Athens or elsewhere in Greece. But picking pockets, not so rare unfortunately. And often organized, as in this example. Glad someone's getting caught.
Recently I did read a report from someone who was accosted by 3 men. Two held him while the other emptied his pockets and stole his daypack.
