Crete Travel Guide

Is there a Rick Steves travel guide that includes the island of Crete? I did not see that island in the Greece travel guide table of contents.

As far as I know he hasn’t done one and none of his tours go there. I like the Rough Guide to Crete, it’s comprehensive and excellent on the archaeological and historic sites, the beaches and the towns and cities.

The best guide is Blue Guide to the Peloponnese.

A whole guide devoted solely to Crete.

Great one on the Aegean Islands.

Great guide also to the entire mainland of Greece.

In fact the Blue Guides are some of the best available.

Always packed with info you won't find anywhere else.

There are some of my go-to-books for Greece.

Steves doesn't do islands really ... because his in-person tours are chiefly mainland .. he suggests Hyrda, but it's mainly as an add-on for folks who want to say theyve been to a Greek Isle, and it can be a day-trip (although, since it's car-less, visitors mainly get to see the harbor, unless they hike or hire a donkey for inland) - his only island suggestions are his TV show on cruise to Santorini-Mykonos etc.

Agree with both Blue Guide and Rough Guide ... have them both ... their thorough backgrounding helped me appreciate some poignant memorials in various places (referring to tragedies under various conquerors/oppressors). These days, one doesn't need a guidebook for recommends for hotels/restaurants, or for transit timetables -- you google on internet and/or ask on forums for the latest info. What the better guidebooks do is give in-depth descriptions, historical context that enable you to understand the meaning & significance of places & artifacts .. and nowhere is that more important than in Crete.

PS: with Rough Guide u needn't carry a 5-lb paperback around; just decide which sections are relevant to your trip, carefully pull each off the backing, use silver Duct Tape to make a spine and voila! You have pocket-size guidettes.
