Crete Iraklion

We will be in Iraklion on a cruise stop in December which is offseason. I noted the HOHO buses were down for the season. How close is the port from the Archeology Museum and is it feasible to get a taxi to Knossos?

Thanks!

The Museum is less than a mile from the port and Knossos is less than 5 miles south of the port. Both easily reached by taxi.

The museum, while not large, mounts modern displays about a variety of cultural life. Worthwhile.

Rioe2Rio is a good site for getting a cost estimate. Here is a link:

It looks like $18-$23 by taxi, 2.6 miles, 4 minutes from the airport to the museum on a Sunday afternoon.

We caught the bus to Knossos just across the street from the museum. I believe there was a taxi stand there as well. Knossos isn't far by bus (or taxi) but not walkable without a lot of time. We walked everywhere else for the rest of our time in Heraklio (about a day). The city center is fairly compact. After the museum and Knossos, our favorite sight was the Koules Fortress.

Be sure to check the winter hours for Knossos the archeological sites are on reduced hours during the off season. The cruise ship dock is right at the most interesting area of Herklion with the Fortress right by the shore on the breakwater/pier along with the Venetian era harbour. This whole area is easy to walk to except Knossos which does require the bus or taxi.
Here is what it is like.
