What is the best platform to find accommodation on Crete for 11 days, end of May for 5 adults? VRBO?
Also wondering if we should consider staying in 2 areas, (Chania & ?) to break up driving hours.
It sounds like we should rent a car to explore the Island.
After Crete we head to Naxos, Nafplion then Athens.

I would stay in Chania the whole time. You can visit Knossos, 7000BC, either coming from or going to Heraklion.

I personally would not stay in Chania the whole time but the decision is whether to do a lot of driving or move. We stayed in Chania for four nights out of an 11 night stay. We moved around instead of driving and it worked well. I have attached my trip report so you could see how we divided our time. There were only two of us and having traveled with groups, it is harder to move than with two so would probably not do exactly the same way.
We used booking.com but did not have a group.

I love the Chania area and can easily kill a week there but it would depend on your need to activity and how much time you have. If you’re only there 3 to 4 nights, I would stay there and then if you want to see Knossos/Herklion do it on the way out catch an evening flight or the night ferry, or catch one night there at the end for transit reasons. But you can also do it as a day trip from Chania; it would be a long day but a gorgeous drive there and back.
There are also a number of hotels and places on Booking.com and similar that offer vacation apartments that have 2 to 3 bedrooms so although I think you absolutely could look at VRBO or similar you may have luck just with regular hotels as well.
