Realistically to get any informative response you need to give us some information on when you are going, what interest you ,how long do you plan to stay in Crete and where else do you plan to visit.

We spent two weeks in Chania, and if you have less time try to stay as long as you can.
We had a rental car and recommend that you have one to explore the area.
We stayed in a cottage that we rented. I highly recommend Maria at diktynna-travel.gr in Chania. They are a travel agency that works with agencies world wide who are sending clients to Greece, very knowledgeable.
