Crete/Chania day activity suggestions

We will be on a cruise and it stops in Crete for a day. I believe it docks near Chania. Arrives at 8:30am and leaves at 7pm. Looking for suggestions on activities or tours to do. We are in our early 40’s and love hiking, eating and any outdoor activities. It will be the beginning of August and with the boat not arriving until 8:30am I’m not sure if it would be possible to find a hike with the heat unless it is shaded? Open to any activity and/or tour.

I wouldn't want to miss the Archaeological Museum in Chania. Although not large, it's top notch, with great Minoan artifacts, among other things. Closed Tuesdays. (But might blow your hiking plans.)

Depending on the bus times (you can check KTEL: https://www.e-ktel.com/en/services/dromologia ), you may have time for Samaria Gorge. Buses leave from Chania to the top of the gorge, you walk to the bottom, then you get a ferry from there (Agia Roumeli) to Chora Sfakion and the bus collects you from there and takes you back to Chania. It's a really beautiful walk- we did it in late August and it wasn't too hot. There are other gorges as well but I'm not sure the public transport arrangement for those- Samaria Gorge is the most popular. Good luck whatever you decide.

Editing to add this link with the specific times (from the official KTEL website, although it says 2024): https://e-ktel.com/en/samaria-gorge-en
And yes, it looks like the departure would be too late to be back at 7pm.

Post #3 There is no way you can get back from a Samaria gorge walk using public transport in time for your 19.00 ship departure.

The ship will be docked at Souda Bay about a half hour trip to Chania. There will be lots of buses and taxis available. I would suggest you go to Chania. It has an old town area with its ancient harbour and some of the ancient city walls still intact. It is a destination on its own merits. We just got back home from Greece and spent 7 days in Chania. It is delightful.
I have not had a chance to edit my Chania photos but here are images from a previous visit.
