I am in the beginning stages of planning,
I want to go to Loutro.
If I fly in to Chania, can I get to Sfakia without prior reservations for transportation?
What are your recommendations and approximate costs for transportation for that?

By bus I presume? Transferring to ferry.
We loved Loutro, drove to Sfakia.

You could Google whether a bus goes from Chania to Sfakia. We also drove.
Once in Skakia, you go to a booth and buy ticket for the ferry which runs regularly. I cant remember the cost, but its likely different now, and you can likely Google the prices too

Greek bus fares are cheap. See https://www.e-ktel.com/en/services/dromologia for Crete. Several local travel agencies also publish their take on the info, which you might use if the official KTEL site doesnt have what you need.

This was before covid but there was no direct bus from Chania to Sfakia. The KTEL bus went from Chania to Rethymnon ( I don't remember if we had to transfer to a second bus in Rethmnon or not. The bus finished the trip to Heraklion where we had to transfer to another bus to Sfakia. Bus fares are inexpensive in Crete.
