I have the great opportunity to go and visit my son while he is studying abroad. He and I will have on a four day opportunity to go to Crete. What are must do things in our short time? Would love to Kayak a bit, Loutro looks delightful, where to stay, etc.. this will be happening in mid March.

Loutro is lovely but quite small. We took a ferry there and back and stayed at Hotel Porto Loutro on the beach for a few days during our two weeks on Crete and enjoyed it. Very reasonable prices.
One of the two prettiest cities in Greece is Chania and it is a must see/stay while you are on Crete. Enjoy this special part of the world!
You can only reach Loutro by ferry and March is off season. You need to check schedules to make sure they will work for you. When visiting the Southwest coast, I was told several times that in the winter, many people move to Chania.
I second the recommendation to go to Chania. It is lovely and a better location for March.
I agree Chania is the best choice.
