Chania - biking?

We are considering staying in Kalathas. Everything I have read mentions bus, car hire, or taxi as transportation to Chania. Is it feasible to bike there? As far as safety and difficulty level?

We aren’t extremely experienced bikers and will have our 12 yo with us. We do bike and have done a 5 day biking trip in France (when said child was 9) so we aren’t inexperienced either. It looks to be about 10km which we could definitely handle depending on the terrain and safety issues with other motor vehicles.

Any thoughts appreciated!

I would worry about the cars, as Greek drivers use the shoulders to drive on. I don't think they will be expecting bicycles. When I drove on Crete, I used the shoulder to allow more aggressive drivers to overtake me.

Cycling is not really a means of transport that is part of Greek culture. No comparison to be made with France.
There are no cycle paths, if you are already worried about renting a car you should be even more worried about renting bikes.

Wait until you get there to see if you want to do it

After many trips to Greece I can honestly say I have never seen a cyclist on the main highway. Take the bus.
