Chania

Several questions concerning Chania:
Is it better to stay in town and then drive out to a beach or stay at a beachfront resort and day trip into town?

Concerrning resorts in the vicinity of Chania, any recommendations?

Is all inclusive worth the cost?

Thanks in advance.

We stayed in hotel in town and I wish we hadn’t .

5 days - we weee supposed to stay longer but just wanted to leave . Streets lined with tourist shops , tavernas with touts constantly trying to draw you in ( don’t stop to look at a menu without expecting to be left alone to do so ) .

The closest beach to swim in ( good 20 minute walk from old town ) was not impressive at all !

Visit Chania - as far as I’m concerned you could do that in one or two visits - but pick somewhere outside town to stay , wish I had .

I'm with Pat on this one. Whilst I've never stayed in Chania (we rented villas whilst in Crete) I have visited on a day trip and agree that it can be done in a day. I can't imagine wanting to stay there.

As for beaches in Chania I didn't see any that looked inviting, they were mostly small patches of rock and shingle.

I can't speak for resorts as I've never stayed in one in Crete and as for the value of all inclusive only you can really decide if it's worth the cost.

Chania old town does not have resorts. You will find the resorts along the coast outside of the city walls. Some are close enough to walk to the old town but others you probably will need to take a taxi into the old town area.
We have visited Chania and stayed in the old town inside the city walls several times and plan another visit next year. Indeed the old town is full of small narrow back alleys with lots of small family run hotels shops and tavernas. It is busy but that is part of the experience. We have always visited in May or September when the crowds are smaller than peak season.
This is what Chania old town is like.

Thank you all for the replies.

We booked at the Theodore Boutique Hotel, which is 7km west of Chania city center. Close to Chania, but not too close it seems.

Any other recommendations on Chania? What beach would you recommend? Other day trips? Off the beaten path in Chania?

This will be our first time to Greece, so thanks in advance.

I personally prefer to stay in the old town- it's easy to get the bus to the nicest beaches during the day and then at night you can enjoy walking around the town and going for dinner (tho I appreciate others here did not enjoy the experience as much as I did). For nearby beaches, my favourites were Falasarna (big waves) and Elafonisi (pink sand). The KTEL buses take you directly to both.
