Celiac Disease

Going to Greece for 13 days end of May. I have celiac disease and must avoid gluten. I had no problem in Italy. Any restaurant recommendations in Athens, Santorini and Crete.

Thank you
Janet

I have no specific recommendations, but we traveled to Greece (Athens, Naxos, Santorini, Nafplio) a couple of years ago and had zero issues finding GF options anywhere for one of our traveling companions. You will find plenty of grilled or baked seafood, grilled meats, potatoes, cheeses, and excellent salads. We did not seek out any specific restaurants; we just dropped in and found that every place we tried was loaded with GF menu options.

The food was amazing and one of our favorite parts of traveling in Greece!

Thank you so much. Very hard planning travel with the fear of not being able to eat. Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks Again

Download and print the card available at https://www.celiactravel.com/cards/greek/#english

Present this every time you order and ask for help. Some innocent looking dishes can hide gluten. Garlic sauce for example can have bread added and fish is normally dipped in flour before frying.

I'm sure you will find everyone very helpful.

I think you will have many options. Many items like grilled meats, seafood and salads are simply prepared. In my experience unless you are going to a small village, the restaurant staff likely speak some English and will understand your needs or questions. I am gluten intolerant and traveled to Greece (Athens and Naxos) in October and had no issues and many food choices. Also, are you aware of the Find Me Gluten Free app? If not, suggest you download it. I used it in Greece and it’s helpful!
