Celebrity Cruise, baby and car seat

So happy I found this forum. Greece cruise with family and 9 month old. ‘Have baby will travel’ is my daughter’s philosophy as was ours 30 years ago.

I’ve been researching baby’s and car seats and talking to celebrity and it’s about clear as mud. US and Greece require infant in car seats. So do we. We’re planning to bring his car seat. I’m reading that infant car seats are different in Greece, that hooking a U.S. car seat in a Greek vehicle could be an issue, etc.

Looks like three excursions we’re going on are confirmed ‘coaches’. On past travels there’s always been seat belts in these vehicles - normally high end. I’m getting mixed messages online and from cruise regarding ability to use a car seat, whether we’ll be traveling in vehicles with no seat belts, and whether baby will have to be a ‘lap baby’ on the excursions.

Any insights from cruisers, travelers or locals appreciated. Thx

Just a thought. Instead of taking a ships cruise perhaps consider renting a car and do your own excursion. Car rental companies have baby seats available.

We are doing that in Santorini because we want to limit activities to 3-4 hours and many of the cruise excursions are 7 hours long. But it’s always a bit risky doing them on your own. If you’re late they’ll leave you behind. :(

What are the other excursions you are planning to do? If you are willing to rent a car on Santorini chances are you can also take a taxi. at other ports of call. Taxi drivers that take you to excursion sites are reliable and they know they have to get you back in time.

Coaches are a much safer form of transport than cars. There are very, very few serious accidents involving coaches. When it does happen it makes the news all over Europe. So I really would not worry about the baby on coach trips. He can sit on your lap.

For cars, you are right that US car seats are not legal for use in EU because of the chest strap which is mandatory in the US but prohibited in Europe. I think it’s unlikely in the extreme that anyone would question your car seat. The fixing system is also different (the EU system is called Isofix) but if you have a seat that can be used with a seatbelt that will work just the same as home.

Thank you for your insights. Ironically, Santorini and Athens we do have private tour/transportation arranged. We have had conversations with the company on these two occasions that the transport vehicle will have a car seat or adapt to ours. We just need to finalize which.

We were hesitant however to plan more trips outside of the cruise excursions as we’ve known of others who have missed the return time. We personally experienced this last April. Luckily the tour was a celebrity excursion so the ship waited but we were well over a half hour late and young and old alike had to run to the ship. They literally pulled out within minutes of our checking back in.

Thank you again!
