The four of us are going to Greece for the first time in early June and spending 3 nights on Paros. We are ready to book an Airbnb and was wondering if we should get a rental car. Some of the Airbnb rentals are away from Parikia and some are in Parikia itself. I realize that buses can take you other parts of the island but we would be at their mercy for schedules. We would like to see some of the villages on the island and beaches too. Advantage of staying in Parikia without a car would be less hassle just to walk to restaurants etc. Any advise on pros and cons of what we should do. I see that car rentals are cheap and perhaps could save some by renting away from Parikia. What is your experience?
As on Santorini, a rental car on Paros gives you maximum flexibility and spontaneity. You can also take it on the local car carrier that travels between Paros and Antiparos from the little port of Pounta if you fancy a daytrip. If you live outside the EU be sure to bring an International Driving Permit with you to Greece. Rental companies might not ask you for it but it's required of tourists by Greek law.
Parikia is the hub for the local buses, and in our experience, the Greek island buses are reliable and inexpensive. Sure you will have to look at their schedule, but within only three days, I don't think you will have time for more destinations than you can reach by bus plus a short walk.
Just for another option, when we were on Paros some years ago, there was a mountain bike rental place in Parikia. We had a lot of fun exploring the island by bike.
