The threads here suggest that car rental is useful for beach-hopping and archeological sights in Paros and Santorini. Since we plan lots of days just lounging, however, I don't think we'll need a car every day. Is car rental on an as-needed basis after we arrive easy and reasonable. Will they drop the car off at our hotel? Rick Steve's Greece book says it's better to rent cars before you leave home, which is why I'm concerned about this. If you have experience with this, please let me know how it went. Thanks in advance.

Cars will be readily available there on short notice, but if you need one with an automatic transmission you should definitely book in advance. They're somewhat scarce. Be advised that parking will be a challenge in August when visiting tourists clog the streets. Be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required.
These agents will deliver to your hotel: Vazeos in Oia, Tony's in Firostefani, Spiridakos in Fira (and at the ferry port) and Motor Inn in Kamari Beach.
