Yes, in October it shouldn't be hard to find a car. However, you can book in advance to know the types of cars available, their prices, and the rental terms. I always book ahead, even in the off-season.

I think it's mainly because if you pick it up at the end of the day, you return it at the end of your final day since pricing works in 24-hour blocks.
Let's take a 2-day rental as an example: you pick it up in the late afternoon the day before your first day of use, you use it on Day 1, then on Day 2, and in the late afternoon of Day 2 you return it since you won't need it for the evening and night.
In short, it's just because it can often be more convenient.
- Is it worthwhile/possible to rent into the last day and drive rental car to airport (before flight to Athens)?
This is possible with the vast majority of rental companies. Pick-up and drop-off can be done either at the port, at the airport, or sometimes directly at your accommodation. You'll need to check this directly with them and on their websites.
- Any particular rental that is better than rest?
Better’ is a subjective concept. When I rent a car on an island, I only use one method that I'm satisfied with:
I go to Google Maps, zoom in on the island's port, and search for 'Rent a Car.' Then, I check the websites of the rental companies that show up in the results, prioritizing local and Greek companies. I never rent from majors. I also avoid companies that require prepayment or asking your credit card information. In most cases, I only choose those that just feature a simple form to enter your dates and car type, or even those where you communicate strictly by email. It's my own "better" (and of course, I check the reviews, but with a grain of salt).
In the last twenty years I’ve been renting cars or scooters on the islands or the mainland this way, I’ve never had any issues with local rental companies. Before that, there weren't many options online, everything was handled once you were on the island or through your accommodation provider.
