Car rental in Crete

I want to rent a car in Hania to get out to Elafonisi beach for a couple nights but they’re either booked out or more expensive than the other companies. Have you rented a car in Crete? Can you recommend any car hire companies?

It's been a couple of years and I don't remember the rental car company but we took a bus from Chania to Rethymnon, spent a few days there and then picked up a rental car. Maybe another city that you could bus to would have more availability.

In Sept./Oct. 2019, we rented from Europcar, after checking the pricing with Pop’s (which we used the previous year for the Greek mainland) and others. Europcar actually delivered the car to our hotel in Iraklio when we were ready to depart that city, then let us follow them in our car to the outskirts of town by the airport, saving time and stress trying to navigate the city on our own to start. Three weeks later, arriving in the maze of narrow, confusing, often one-way streets of Hania and trying to get near our hotel in the pedestrian-only section at the old harbor, we were able to park the car and they came and picked it up.

In the interior part of Crete, although we didn’t rent a convertible, we saw tons of convertibles with rental car company stickers, so it appears that lots of folks do opt for a drop-top.

Thank you both! I’ll look into renting in a different city and see if that works.

Ask your hotel. They may have connection and recommendations. I found some local companies in Greece not listed on big aggregator sites.

With the cost of rentals, wondering if there's a place in Elafonisi I could rent a scooter to get around? I could take the bus down there.

Be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required.

My advice is to not to rent from Auto Club Car Rental. The car we received was in such poor condition that we had to request a replacement. That was not an easy or quick process, and it wasted precious vacation time. Customer service is not their forte.

We have rented from Autorentals Crete several times. They are a local company with excellent reviews. There are several good Locally owned car rental companies in Crete. They all work hard for your business. Be sure to rent from one of these companies.
