We will be staying in Athens 4 nights and then renting a car for a tour of the Peloponnese and the last night of our vacation will be spent close to airport as we have an early flight back to Chicago. Should we take metro to airport and rent and return car there or rent in Athens somewhere else and return it at airport? We have not been to Greece for 30 years and have never driven a car there.

Personally we always go to the airport for the car rental. that way you don't have to drive in Athens traffic which is a bit chaotic.

We are renting and dropping at different places. There is a fee. Ive read of some rental agencies that meet you wherever and I don't think there is a fee (maybe that would be a new thread topic for you). We are renting through Athens Car Rental from the airport, and dropping off at the port a week later for 30 euro extra

Since you are likely going to stay near the airport the night before your early flight home, it would be easiest to rent roundtrip from the airport, and have them drop you at the hotel.
