Hello! I will be spending two weeks in Crete in the fall and was curious if anyone had good experiences with a local car rental company that they would recommend (or any that they would avoid…). Thanks!
We used https://autorentals-crete.gr/ based on stanbr's recommendation and they were great.
We did a one way rental from Chania to Herkalion. On both ends we met an agent at a very convenient parking lot, but you will want to make sure to have a working mobile to coordinate. Doing these close-in transfers saved us so much time and hassle.
We used the same company. In our case, they met us by the bus station in Chania for pickup and we returned to their airport location in Heraklion.
We were pleased with the service and the price.
Autorentals Crete is our go to car rental company. We have been using them for years. Great service. You can pick up and drop off at either airport. Tthey can also deliver the car to your hotel ( or close to it depending on restrictions of where a vehicle can not go.)
One tip, you may want to spend the first few days just visiting your destination city (Chania, Heraklion) Chances are you will not need the car right away, so arrange for the car to be delivered when you plan to start touring the countryside. Saves you a few Euros and solves the problem of finding a parking spot.
We rented from Auto Club in Chania and it was a nightmare! The car had mechanical problems and it took them approximately 36 hours to rectify the situation and get us a new vehicle. Their lack of customer service and responsiveness was appalling. Avoid them like the plague.
The last time I was in Crete was over thirty years ago, but for what it's worth, fellow Frenchies I know who have been used to going to Crete for many years often recommend these car rental companies:
