4 of us will be arriving in Santorini and leaving there via ferry. We will be in Santorini for 3 nights. We would like to rent a car. Should we just wait to do so when we arrive (in late June) at the port or is it better to book ahead of time? Also will we need an international driver's permit?

If you need a car with an automatic transmission it's recommended that you book in advance. They're scarce. Spiridakos Car Rentals has a website and an office at the port. The IDP is required by Greek law of anyone who is not a citizen of the EU.

We took a taxi to our hotel and then rented a car later and was able to drop it at the ferry area for no extra charge. I needed the IDP. If you're staying in one of the towns, you may not need a car the entire time so I'd get my bearings first unless you already have a plan. We didn't make a reservation - our hotel manager got us the car ($30 euro per day). We were there last April so the availability of cars in late June may be different. Hope this helps.
