I don't like the idea of taking out my tiny sim card and swapping it for a international sim card. I am thinking it might be easier to buy a international phone before I leave and think of it as investment for future trips.. With that in mind where can I buy a international phone and sim card for under $100.

No need for an "International" phone, all you need is one compatible with European Networks, which anymore, nearly any smart phone is GSM compatible. You need to make sure it is unlocked, then you are good to go. I get a new phone every few years, I get my old one unlocked, and that becomes my travel phone.
