Bus (or train) from Athens to Larissa

Hi all, my friend and I will be traveling (return trip, but 6 days apart) from Athens to Larissa. We are looking at bus and train options, and are wondering:

  • bus vs. train: what is the best mode of transport?
  • are advance tickets required/encouraged?
  • can travel times/tickets be changed if our schedule changes?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Buses in Greece are generally quicker and more reliable than trains so are probably your best bet. The only advantage of trains are that they can be more sociable: you are facing other passengers rather than in rows.

Unless you are travelling over Greek Easter I wouldn’t expect to book in advance. Turn up about 30 minutes before the scheduled time to buy a ticket and find your bus. You need terminal B in Athens which is in Liossion Street. Unless money is a real problem a taxi is probably your best bet. Otherwise you have two alternatives

a) get a metro to Attiki and a bus down Liossion
b) get a metro to Agios Nikolaos and walk down.

Travel times by bus and train is almost the same (4 hours). Train tickets can booked in advance at www.trainose.gr (€34 one way). Buses are operated by the KTEL Larisas (no English web site).
Personally, I'm a railway addict, but over many years I found the Greek bus system to be more reliable than the train. However, if I go now, I would take the train, because it's probably the last chance to go on the scenic mountain route Thitorea - Domokos, which will close for passenger traffic in april 2019.
