Booking flights in Greece

Hello! I’m hoping and planning to go to Crete later this year, before flying back to Athens to explore the Peloponnesus. Of course, I’ll look into getting my flights to and from Greece about six months before traveling. I’m wondering, though, how I should approach the flights from Crete to Athens? Would I need to get these so far in advance? Surely not a day or two ahead, like for the ferry? We are a multigenerational group of six so would like to plan as much in advance as possible. We are planning to travel in the off/shoulder season, not during the height of summer. I’d appreciate any input. Thanks!

We are going to Crete in May and we just bought tickets. We are flying on one ticket from U.S. through Zurich and Athens to Chania, Crete. We bought multicity tickets returning then from Athens to U.S.. We have a separate ticket from Crete to Athens on Aegean Air.

I used goggle flights and then booked on United, even though the flight to Crete was on Swiss Air and Aegean Air.

Several years ago we went to Santorini from Athens and we bought a separate ticket on Aegean Air to fly to Santorini. At that time, it was much more expensive to buy as one ticket. We allowed 90 minutes between flights (although most people say 2 is much safer) and it worked out fine.

Aegean Air allows for an option that you can purchase that allows you to change flights. It is more expensive but not that much more, especially since you most likely have to pay for luggage anyway. The carry on size allowed is not what you can carry on a U.S. flight.

Both this time and earlier, I bought tickets in January on Aegean Air for May flights. There was also was a seat sale both times. If you know when you will need flights, it doesn't make any sense to wait to the last moment to me.

In Dec’19 I saw a flight on Aegean from Heraklion to Santorini for < $75 and did not jump on it immediately and it sold out. If it’s a good price then buy it.
