Boat/Ferry connections To/from Athens i.e. Piraeus-Hydra in November

Hello,
I am planning to be in Athens on Nov 12 and was planning to spend in a few days in the islands of Naxos (3) , then Mykonos (2), then a road trip around Peloponnese (8) and last in Hydra (2). However to my surprise disappointment I have not yet seen November Ferry schedule available and I fear services will be very limited or not at all.

Any suggestion of accurate Greek ferry schedule/availability or other boat services specifically to the above Islands, especially Hydra-Piraeus so I can get back to Athens after rental car is returned in Erminoni. Is the Hydra-Piraeus route year round? what other alternatives ?

I would really appreciate any up to date information so I can firm up my itinerary as it's getting close.

Regards,
Al

I do not see anything available on the dates I am looking on www.ferries.gr. Not sure if the schedule is not out yet or none available. Do you know if services extend thru November in past years ?

Wait another two weeks, you will see the schedules.

The ferries operate all year round, it is the main, and often the only means of transport for the inhabitants, for the supply of food, raw materials, equipment, etc.

Although there will be ferries every day, and since you will have already seen Naxos and Mykonos, I don't see why you go to Hydra unless you have something special to do or see there (or be a fan of Leonard Cohen)
In your place I would use the 2 days of Hydra on Naxos or elsewhere

Thank you for your reply it makes me feel a bit better. :) I hope the schedules will be out soon .

I wanted to visit Hydra since it’s the most recommended island by Rick Steves and it’s not on any cruise ship itineraries like Mykonos or Santorini. I also am thinking to spend more days in the road trip on Peloponnese ( I.e. extra days in Delphi or Olympia) and cut one island from my plan. Thoughts ?

Rick Steves, recommends Hydra when you're in Athens for a short time and don't have the time or the ability to spend more than a day or two on a Greek island.
Why Hydra? I do not know. The island of Aegina, for example, is closer and just as good, or even better depending on what you are looking for.

Also know that:

  • Among about 200 inhabited and visitable islands in Greece only 4 or 5 are cruise destinations. This leaves you room to see the other islands :))

  • Traveling by ferry is very time-consuming and takes at least half a day.

  • The weather is not an exact science, but in November the weather can be very bad and cause a cancellation of the ferries.
If you are on an island at this time you will be stuck for a day or two. (in Hydra six days in a row without any ferries during winter 2015)

So, if your goal is to go to an island, my advice would be to keep Naxos and adding a night or two (since Rick Steves said you had to go to Naxos) and forget Hydra and Mykonos. So you can reallocate these days saved in the mainland part.

Hydra is amazing! Our favourite Greek island. No cars, so super quiet and peaceful.

Thanks everyone for your replies and advices. Since ferry schedules of November is still not out I am also entertaining ideas of flying out to Crete or even Istanbul for 4-5 days. Thoughts or comments?

I am still hoping I can keep my original plans as it was the itinerary I had from 2020 before Covid changed everything.

Happy travels all !

Ferry schedules and frequencies are fairly stable from year to year.

Last year mid November, from Piraeus to Naxos there were 2 ferries in the morning, a Seajets (Champion Jet2) at 7.00 am and the Blue Star Delos at 7.25 am, plus the Blue Star Naxos at 5.30 pm (except Tuesdays and Saturdays).

The same in the direction Naxos - Piraeus.
But only one daily ferry from Naxos to Mykonos (Seajets)

However I could only advise you to fly instead of taking the ferry.

As I wrote before, the weather during this period can be a problem.
For example, strong winds are announced next week from October 6 in the Cyclades. For now they are expected to be 6 Bf with gusts of 70km/h (which is approaching the upper limit for catamaran ferries to sail), Traditional ferries should be able to sail if the wind does not strengthen but people are starting to worry about whether they will be able to take their ferry. (and some to catch their flight home).

Forgetting Naxos and Mykonos and flying to Crete would also be an option, provided you spend 5 or 6 days there.

That said, you may have a splendid windless weather when you will be there.
Who knows?
