Blue Star Ferry Athens to Mykonos

I was looking on the Blue Star ferry website for travel in mid-May from Athens to Mykonos. There are economy seats (€ 52) and for a few dollars more there are Air Seat Lounges 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (€ 57). What is the difference? Are some lounges better located?

Also, this is a 6 hour ride (7:30am to 1:20pm). The Blue Star ferry carries a lower price point (and slower) than a SeaJet Ferry, and I understand that you can walk out on the deck and enjoy the ride; versus an enclosed cabin on the SeaJets. Is this true?

Air travel is only 40 minutes but with an hour to the airport by Metro plus 90- minutes for pre-boarding/ security you are at a total travel time of nearly 3.5 hours.

Has anyone had experience traveling between Athens and Mykonos? What mode of transportation did you choose and why? Any advice/ opinions you have would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

This is true, but be aware that if you take Lounge tickets with Blue Star and spend most of the time on the decks or in the bars/restaurants on the ferry, you will have paid a Lounge seat for nothing.

JoLui,
Do you know the difference between the special economy price and the lounge seats? Cabins different? More luggage space, etc>?

You cannot take your luggage with you on the ferries, you must leave it in the garage level when you board. You will not have access to it during the trip.

I admit that although I have made quite a few ferry trips to the Greek islands, I have never taken tickets other than economy. But walking around the ferry I was able to see the Lounges, the seats seem more comfortable and it's less noisy and hectic than in economy. That being said, this is normal as I have always seen Lounges with most of the seats empty. For my part, I prefer to walk on the decks of the ferry and enjoy the view, or even spot dolphins following the ship, rather than falling asleep in a seat.

As the saying goes, you will sleep when you will be dead...

Check on YouTube, you will find a lot of videos about Blue Star Ferries

We’ve taken the Ferries 5-6 times now - and yes Blue Star are slowest - but we much prefer them to sea jets ( which are fine but we also like being able to walk around more and outside etc ) .

Greek ferries on their major routes are so comfy - mid May they won’t even be full so lots of seats to choose from ( we only ever book economy ) as the lounges didn’t thrill us from what we could see so glad we didn’t spend extra , shower if they really only 3 euros more you might as well ) .

Blue Star ferries is it for us (Athens to Mykonos) I like comfort. But, given that I'm traveling on May 21 (early season) from Mykonos to Santorini, It looks like I'll be forced to take a high speed ferry. I think Blue Star must start that portion of the route later in the month.

My thanks to all.

Blue Star ferries does not operate on the Mykonos-Santorini route anyway

It will be the “Thunder” from Fast Ferries or a Seajets.

With Seajets take the WorldChampion Jet or the PowerJet and avoid the ExpressJet, SuperJet and SuperJet 2 which are small catamarans where you will be shaken and stuck like in an airplane cabin with no possibility of going outside.

Just one clarification. The large seajet ferries do have an outside deck at the top rear of the ship. There is about sufficient room for up to 100 people. It is a tad windy but the view is great.
