Hello, forum!
My husband and I are deep in the planning of our first trip to Greece this April. Have people found things to do and see along the drive from Meteora back to Athens? (We are visiting Delphi before Meteora.) The hot springs of Thermopylae and/or Kamena Vourla look great and feel much needed for our sore bodies. Any recommendations for visiting and spending the night in that area? Anything else along the route we should look for?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Trikala is a great medium-sized city near to Meteora with some great historical sites and a nice regional feel.
For a mere 50-minute detour (25 each way) you could add the delightful Stone Bridge and Waterfall at Palaiokarya with swimming option (cold, fresh water might be just the ticket in summer heat) as well as the historic Pyli Stone Bridge on the same road.
When I first saw the Pyli Stone Bridge I happened to have a Greek hitch-hiker in my car. He insisted we pull over and I'm glad he did; it's a great site. What I'll always remember, though, is when he told me about this 16th Century structure that, "The Turks paid for bridge, but the Greeks built it!"
Be ready for the multi-hour drive from Athens through the farm lands, our tour went to Thermopylae, Delphi and then Kalambaka.
Kalambaka, Greece is at the base of the Meteora Monastaries. Most of the hotels are so close to the rock formations that you can see them around town on the horizon. Kalambaka is also host to a religious Icon workshop. Meteora Restaurant is a great restaurant that walks you into the kitchen to pick your meal.
