we will be on the island of santorini the first week of october. We were thinking of visiting a winery with good wines and great views...any suggestions?

We visited Santo Winery on our Island Bus Tour. The tour & tasting was about an hour and the view was spectacular. This winery is recommended by Santorini Dave on the website posted above.
If you are interested in a great bus tour of Santorini we took the same route that is mentioned in the website below. We chose to end our tour at Santos and visit Oia on our own the following morning to avoid the crowds. We were staying in Firostephani which has the same Caldera view!

The Koutsoyannopoulos Wine Museum which is included in the list provided by Joe is an excellent experience. It is a winery that has been closed and has been converted to a museum with exhibits depicting all aspects of wine making on Santorini all in the underground wine vaults. The tour is electronic with mobile devices that are activated at each exhibit area.
At the end of the tour there is a wine tasting included in the admission price. As I recall it had 4 or 5 different wines and at the end my wife asked about one of the featured wines that was not part of the tasting and they opened a bottle and gave us a bonus tasting. It was also one of the least expensive winery tours on the island.

Just a couple of hundred yards down the road from Santo Winery is Venetsanos Winery. They are much less commercial and their wines are excellent. They share the same amazing caldera/sunset view as Santo Winery. Reserve a table and sample some wines while indulging yourselves with their snack offerings.
Another vote for Venestsanos. Their tasting and light lunch was a worthwhile experience. Highly recommend! Make a reservation in advance.
