In late September, we’re renting a car at Athens airport and then spending two weeks in the Peloponnese, including a week on Kythira.
I’ve read that some Kythira roads can be rough so wondering if a small car is the best option. We’re staying in Kapsali but would like to tour around the island.
Thanks!
We spent a week in Kythira two years ago, (part of a trip to the Peloponnese). We took the ferry with the car from Neapoli.
The car rented at Athens airport was a Ford Puma which was perfectly adapted.
Here it is on a road in Kythira:

The roads in Kythira are good and do not represent any particular difficulties. I would even say that choosing a car that is not too low-end and powerful enough is more essential on the mountainous and winding roads in the Peloponnese than in Kythira
For information the car was rented from "Capital Rent a Car".
Thanks JoLui. We’re actually going to Kythira because you recommended it in a post I read!

Any car a rental car company has in its fleet can make it up any paved public road you might encounter.
Andrea,
I'm sure you won't regret going to Kythira.
tommyk5, who also sometimes posts on this forum will probably approve .
More infos about Kythira:
I spent several days on Kythira.
Flew from Athens and picked up a car at airport from Panayotis Car Rental.
Very good service and reasonably priced.
Since I am a solo traveler I didn't need anything large or special just a small basic car and it was more than adequate for driving on the island even on gravel roads.
The roads on the island are very good but can be slow going in places due to terrain like mountains and coastlines.
I highly recommend some type of navigation system. I used Google Maps and really made a difference getting to where I wanted to go.
I did a trip report with photos for Kythira on another forum if interested that may help you exploring Kythira::
