Best Small Ship Cruise Lines

Planning to cruise Greek islands for about ten days in August 2017 and want to go on a history-&-culture-oriented small ship. Smithsonian (pricey!) and Roads Scholar look good. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

You really need to go on cruisecritics.com.. they have a great cruise forum.. all on cruising.. ports of call, shore excursions( do on your own and ship sponsored) and cover all the cruise lines.

Here you will get a few of us who have cruised.. but there you will get hundreds of posters who have cruised.. so much more information.

They have sections for everything.. each cruise line.. even each ship.. and all the different itineraries..

Silversea and Seabourn both sail in the Greek Isles, and we have sailed with both those lines (we went thru the Greek Isles with Silversea), and they are both very nice. They are both all-inclusive except shore excursions (and some promotions from time to time might include those as well as airfare or reduced air.) It seems, I've received emails from both in the past few months, offering various specials.

I don't have personal experience with Oceania, but friends have sailed with them several times and enjoyed that line.

Tauck (www.tauck.com), which is a highly-regarded tour company, offers sailings through the Greek Islands, and I believe they use Ponant cruise lines (which is French owned). We've been on a few Tauck tours, but none was ocean based. Friends/relatives have and enjoyed their journeys very much.

If you want to really splurge, go with National Geographic aboard the SeaCloud (the historic 4-mast sailing ship that was build for Merriweather Post of the Post Cereal Fame by E. F. Hutton (her then husband), it is now German owned. You can also book directly with the SeaCloud, as National Geographic reserves only certain dates for sailings under its brand. www.nationalgeographicexpeditions.com When the SeaCloud sails for National Geographic, all shore excursions and some other journey features are included, such as airport transport and possibly arrival hotels (depending on itinerary) so the price will be higher.

The Greek Isles are lovely!!!
