Any suggestions for the best company to use to book ferries in Greece? I'm going from Lavrio Port to Kea, then to Kythnos, then to Serifos and lastly to Sifnos, then back to Piraeus. I'm considering Ferryhopper.com and Greeka.com. I'll be there from June 4 - 27th. I'm also wondering if I should book my tickets online before I leave or just wait until I get there?? Thanks!!
While ferryhopper is convenient for checking ferry timetables and routes, it is best to book on the ferry companies' websites themselves.
There’s no need to worry about booking in advance; you can easily purchase your ferry ticket on the island you’re visiting to travel to the next one.
Have you figured out how to get to the port of Lavrio
I figured I would take a bus or taxi from the Athens airport to Lavrio. Any suggestions?? Would I be able to get a ferry ticket at the port for that day’s ferry to Kea?? Or get a ticket online a few days earlier?? Thanks!
Magic Sea Ferries have a bus service that connects from the airport with their ferry in Lavrio. However the ferry does not go to Kea but straight to Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Kimolos. https://magicseaferries.gr/en/bus-service/
Going back to Piraeus from Sifnos I would prefer Fast Ferries but that is a personal choice because I’m absolutely not a fan of Seajets.
A taxi, although more expensive, will probably be more convenient than the bus. If you take a KTEL bus (orange and white regional bus) from the airport, you must change at the Markopoulo bus station. The journey takes about an hour.
Bus schedule
By taxi, it's about 30 minutes.
You can book the first ferry before leaving for Greece if you think it's more convenient and don't want to buy tickets at the last minute on the day of your arrival. Just be sure to arrive at the port on time to catch it.
Thanks JoLui — for the confirmation re: taking a taxi to Lavrio from the airport. Especially in light of the potential delays related to the new EES arrival requirement. I have booked a ferry ticket to Kea — I’ll wait till I get to the other islands and book as I go along.
I use ferry hopper mostly for moving between islands. For your route I’d probably choose that, because it feels more practical for checking schedules and keeping everything in one place. Since you’re going in June, I would book online before leaving, at least the main legs and especially if any of them fall near weekends. You might still find tickets there, but with that many connections I personally wouldn’t risk it. Greek ferries are great, but one missed or full crossing can mess up the whole rhythm of the trip.
No need to book in advance for June travel. Localticket offices are best as they have most up to date travel info. High winds etc.
Like expat-nomad says, there is no need to book ahead for a ferry in June. I've never done it for over 30 years and never had a problem.
Well guys...... I didn't actually count the Pros and the Cons, but I decided to go ahead and book all of the ferries on FerryHopper.com. I did the Flex tickets just in case something changes. One less thing to think about.... I'm exploring moving to Europe, so I have enough on my plate with all of those decisions!!
Thanks for the input.
