Would the second best be of interest? What makes a beach "the best" in your opinion?

Yes, "best" in terms of what? Party atmosphere, seclusion, nudity, family-orientation, swimming, ease of accessibility, what?

you have are right guys,so I will go on holiday with my wife, where we enjoy a romantic holiday with idyllic landscapes and quaint shops for food and drink, and for the beaches I love those around them are lush!

I think Skopelos and Skiathos would be good for you if you want "lush". But the most unique and amazing island is Santorini. Stay in Oia, the most beautiful and romantic village on the island. However, the beaches are not normal. They are black sand/grit/pebbles.

Not many Greek islands are exactly lush, if you mean greenery, maybe some pine forests, but more low scrub and dry.

Best beaches...I never met a bad beach, but some I liked....

Paradise Beach on Mykonos,,,pretty much party full time...fun, nice water and fine pebbles. Not relaxing, crowded, but that relates back to the party.

Santorini, great views, beaches good, sometimes have to worry about crowds,

Crete, the southern shore can be great for miles of sand, not so crowded, water is warm, but rougher than most Aegean beaches. We were in Matala, good choice of three nearby beaches.

Best beach? My favorite was on Koufonisia, bit difficult to get to the island, only worth a stay of 4 to 6 days, Pori beach is a hike from town, but worth it. Fine sand on a shallow bay, not crowded even in peak season. Generally highly ranked on different sites. They have a couple tavernas on the beach now, otherwise pack a picnic. If you wish various states of dress, all options are open.

Paul,

You may want to explore this website to help you decide where you want to go: http://www.visitgreece.gr/en/greek_islands

We visited Greece in late September a few years ago & I enjoyed swimming in 'Ornos' beach in the island of Mykonos.
The water was very refreshing & it was like no other sea water I'd ever experienced.

(I found out that the Aegean sea is very rich in Iodine)

Santorini is very romantic but we did not go to any beaches there.

Have a wonderful trip!

Paul,

According to my Frommer's Greece Travel guidebook, this is the list of the 'best beaches' in Greece:

  • Arvanitia ( Naphlion, Peloponnese)- after a vigorous and tiring day of sightseeing, this convenient little municipal beach can seem like the best in Greece.
  • Plaka ( Naxos, Cyclades) - The most beautiful & pristine beach on the island.
  • Paradise (Mykonos, Cyclades)- The quintessential party beach, known for wild revelry that continues through the night.
  • Lalaria Beach (Skiathos, Sporades)- This gleaming white-pebble beach boasts vivid aquamarine water and white limestone cliffs with natural arches cut into them by the elements.
  • Myrtos (Kefalonia, Ionian Islands)- Although remote enough to require your own wheels, this isolated sand-pebble beach has long charmed countless visitors. It does lack shade and it offers limited refreshments-perhaps bring a picnic- but the setting makes up for these deficiencies.
  • Vroulidia ( Hios, Northeastern Aegean)-White sand, a cliff-rimmed cove, and a remote location at the southern tip of the island of Hios combine to make this one of the most exquisite small beaches in the northeastern Aegean.

Have a great trip!

Avoid Santorini - OK but too busy and there are many pleasanter islands around.

When in the summer are you going? Parts can get to be very hot and as it is peak season, many will already have booked their holiday. The Ionian islands get a breeze so make the temperatures more bearable. Try Lefkas (on some maps Lefkada) or Cephalonia. Hire a small boat for the day from Lefkas and have lunch in the harbour over on Meganisi.

In the Sporades, try Skiathos, Skopelos (not Skopelos Town in August - too busy but great in June or September but the rest of the island is good in August) or the quieter Alonnisos.

The Pelion on the mainland has lots of small intimate villages tumbling down the hillsides to the sea (not literally) without thousands of tourists and great tavernas in village squares.
