Beaches in Hydra

Hi,

My wife and I will be traveling to Greece next week. During our stay in Greece we will visit Hydra. I have heard that some people are stung by sea urchins in the water while swimming at beaches. So I have been debating myself whether I should go to a beach or beaches in Hydra.

If I go, do you recommend any particular beach? We have only one whole day to go to a beach or beaches while staying in Hydra.

Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

With only one day, you will have plenty of things to do, that not going swimming will not be an issue. ( is that only one whole day on Hydra or one whole day to devote to beaches?)

There is a walking trail to a little beach outside of the town that you could choose to swim at if you see others doing so.

Perhaps, ask when you are there if its a current problem, or something that happens seasonally.

"I have heard"... just what sort of source... one incident 3 yrs ago or 6 people last week?

Hi Joe,

Thank you for answering my questions.

We will stay two nights in Hydra. We will arrive in Hydra in the evening on the first day. I have not decided what to do yet.
I have read in a different forum that there seems to be sea urchin problems in Hydra. But I will ask the locals when we get there as you have suggested.

If you have not been to Greece before, you will find the people there friendly and helpful. Most of the time it seemed we were treated more like a long lost "cousin" visiting, not a "tourist customer".

A greek salad, a loaf of bread and the house white wine is a wonderful lunch.... please have one for me!

We walked an easy trail out to a beach (left of the harbor) and enjoyed a couple of hours. Be aware that surface is pebbles, so we wore sandals in the water. Then we took a little launch -I think it was 5€- back to the town. No one had any trouble with sea urchins.

There is a "water taxi" that goes from the harbor to various beaches along the coast. My RS tour hiked to this place which had lounge chairs with umbrellas to rent for €3 on a small quiet beach. Be sure to take swimming shoes, most of the beaches in Greece are pebbly. The hike, at a very slow pace since everyone kept stopping to take photos, took a little less than 1.5 hours. The Four Seasons Hotel is just a few meters away and runs a "water taxi" to/from the harbour. It's cheaper than the other "taxis" at €3 one-way or €6 round-trip. Warning: once you get there, you may never want to leave. I can't believe it's barely a week since I was there!

Chani-- the "this place" link shows the Sunset Restaurant at the west edge of the harbor, not the Four Seasons hotel with the beach chairs you mention

Hi,
It looks like that everyone had a wonderful time at the beaches. So I think we will go to a beach. Thank you for the water taxi information. I appreciate it.
