Going to Athens, Elia Beach Mykonos, Oia Santorini and Chania Crete in September. More interested in quality Greek food at reasonable price than high priced mediocre food with a view. Willing to travel a little if it's worth it. Any suggestions?
You will find more authentic Greek food in Athens and Chania, Crete.
In Athens, To Kafeneio, Loukenou , 26,, Kolonaki
In Chania- Taman, Well of the Turk, Glossitses
Good luck with Mykonos - you’ll find over priced mediocre food . Best stuff is a cheap gyros from a take out place .
Also be aware many seafood dishes are sold BY WEIGHT - so if it says fresh fish ( etc ) note carefully of dish price is per dish or per kilogram or 100 grams - you can end up with sticker shock !
There is a good restaurant near the waterfront in Mykonos, it is called Nikos.
Everywhere we've been in Greece we've found traditional Greek restaurants/taverns with good food. Keep away from whatever says fast food, as it tastes just like that (unless you like Greek fast food like gyros and souvlaki).
I am a vegetarian and always manage to find delicious meals in any of the Greek ports.
In Oia try Candouni, Skala, Anemomilos Hotel Restaurant and Santorini Mou. Santorini Mou is fun. The owner and friends play music and sometimes there is spontaneous dancing.
O.k., that's an easy one:
- Get away from the main tourist strip.
- Go late, like 10 p.m., when the locals go.
- Listen to what language is mainly spoken in the restaurant. If it's mainly Greek, you have found a restaurant that is favored by the locals, which is usually a good sign in terms of authenticity and good value.
If you are really lucky, you may find a really traditional place, maybe in a village far away from the beaches and touristy areas, small and not fancy-looking, where they lead you into the kitchen and let you have a look into the pot to see what's cooking. You will probably not find twenty items on the menu but only one or two dishes to choose from. Now that's as authentic as it gets. You'll just have to keep your eyes open because those places aren't necessarily in any guide book.
In Athens, Mani Mani is just what you’re looking for. Fabulous food, very reasonably priced for that quality, and no views to speak of. The interior of the restaurant is nice, but you’re not paying for a view of the Acropolis (although they’re just southeast of it) and you can focus on lunch or dinner.
