Athens to Trikala to Corfu - Train/Bus or Drive?

We are visiting Greece for the 1st time, spending time in Corfu and stopping in Trikala for a few days to visit my wife's high school pen pal. They've never met. Would prefer not to bother with a car, that said, I'm having trouble identifying Train/Bus routes and time tables so I'm considering renting a car and would appreciate advice on the best mode of transport from Athens through Meteora to Corfu and back. We comfortable with public transit having completed several trips to Europe without renting a car. So, 2 questions;
1. Is public transportation a reasonable way to travel from Athens through Meteora to Corfu and back?
2.Are there websites (in English) that can be used to plan a Train/Bus/Ferry trip, or should I be using a travel agent or local guide to help?

Thank you

There is just one direct train per day from Athens to Trikala and Kalampaka, and Trainose (the operator of the trains) is not famous for its reliability. Buses, on the contrary, are frequent and mostly on time. For details look up the web site of the respective KTEL (regional bus organisation), i.e. KTEL Trikala: http://www.ktel-trikala.gr/?module=default&pages_id=14&lang=en

To get to Meteora you would have to go by bus to Kalampaka first. There are buses from there to the Meteora but rather infrequent. So I'd consider renting a taxi or driver service which can bring you from Kalampaka to the most remote monastery, the Megala Meteoro, first and then help you to work your way back to Varlaam, Hagios Stephanaos and finally down to Hagios Nikolaos. Another possibility wold be to stay not in Trikala but in Kastraki below the monastries and to take the earliest possible bus or a taxi up to the Megalo Meteoro and walk back, with stops at the other monasteries, to Kastraki. Bring sturdy shoes so that you can see Hagia Triada (steep de- and ascent) as well.
