We're looking for a two-day trip to Delphi from Athens, leaving from our cruise ship (Piraeus) and returning to our hotel near the Athens airport. We've seen some options for one-day tours or two-day tours that include a site other than Delphi that we aren't interested in. We were hoping to get George's Taxi, but they seem only to do pre-set tours for Delphi--one day or two day with a stop in Meteora, which we're not interesting in doing. Any advice?
I am assuming that due to the relatively short distance, and the limited time needed at Delphi (an afternoon or morning is plenty),that to tie up transport and/or a guide for two days is not an efficient use of their time.
There may be someone that could do a more customized two day tour, but the cost likely goes up exponentially, meaning not double the one day price, but 3-4 times more.
Meteora is awesome! We found it much more impressive, and enjoyable, than Delphi.
I'm sure you have your reasons why you don't want to visit Meteora, but the visit there was a highlight of our trip. Much better than Delphi. Since our Best of Greece tour visited Delphi, when we got back to Athens, We rented a car in Athens to travel to Meteora, which is always an option.
Yes! We self-drove as well, Athens-Delphi-Meteora-Athens. It was easy and enjoyable.
Thank you all! I'm sure Meteora is excellent; it's just that, since I was a little girl (a long time ago), I've wanted to go to Delphi. On an earlier cruise, we paid for a side trip there, and ended up spending less than 2 hours at Delphi itself. But maybe I'm being too rigid. What did you love about Meteora?
We just spent 2 nights in Delphi, arriving late in the evening on the first night, then spending the majority of the day at Delphi sites the second day. We had a rental car, which I recommend for price and flexibility, versus a guided tour. On the way back to Athens is a monastery not as impressive as Meteora, but much less out of the way. About a 45 minute drive from Delphi is the monastery of Hosios Loukas (Saint Luke), close to the town of Steiri. Beautiful setting and very well restored buildings (some renovation from a wildfire nearby last year has closed some sections). It adds 30 minutes driving from going direct to Athens, and takes about an hour or two for the site. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
