Excellent seafood in the Central Market
Any restaurant recommendations that offer a vegetarian option?
The Central Markets on Athinas Street is often overlooked by many but it has some of the best and non-touristy restaurants in the city.
My favorite is Epirus which is a cafeteria style taverna where they have pans of several choices to pick from.
You can pick what ever you want and mix it up.
Service is quick and the food is wonderful. No Souvlaki or Gyro Wraps just home cooked Greek Food.
It's an old type place without all the glitz and works of art type of food presentation. Just lots of excellent food at a low price and wonderful traditional taverna that's hard to find in Athens.
Only serves till about 7 in the evening so get there either for lunch or early dinner to avoid the crowd.
In addition there are several small "kiosk" type servers located throughout the markets that specialize is various dishes almost like mezzes (appetizers)
One of my favorites is Ouzeri Karayiannis a small hole in the wall place where you can get a little of this, a little of that along with a glass of the best Ouzo in town.
My wife and I still talk about dining at Diporto, small restaurant in the basement. No menu, chef just cooks various dishes.
Several places on the Mniskleous Steps (between Monastiraki and Acropolis). The one we liked was called Geros Tou Moria. Another one called Anafiotika looked nice. Anything on this street.
