We will be in Athens for a few days in September and would love to hire a private guide for a day or two to see the big sites the like the Acropolis and the Plaka, but also get off the beaten path a bit. Can anyone share any recommendations or guides they have had great experiences with?
We had a great time with Nikos from WithLocals. We hired him for a day to take us to Marathon. He was early to pick us up, polite, very personable, accommodated my food intolerances, and tailored the itinerary to do what we wanted. If you contact him through WithLocals, and tell him what you are interested in, he will tailor the day(s) to do exactly what you want. I left a positive review for him on the WithLocals site when we returned home.
IF you want to see the big landmark sites, be SURE that whoever you book with is a LICENSED guide ... otherwise the person will not be allowed to escort you thru historic sites, churches, museums etc. Licensing involves several years of intensive study... and many so-called "Guides" are really taxis for hire, with the driver only able to stand outside a ruins site or museum & hand you a folder. Licensed private guides you should be aware, typically chargearound €60 per hour with 2 hr minimum, for groups up to 4.
I rarely join organized tours, but IMHO the most interesting sites to see within day-trip-distance are:
Delphi
Epidavros, can be combined with Corinth
Kap Sounion
I did join a sailing day trip a couple of years ago which was awesome: https://www.sailingathens.com/ echatspin
To complete Janet's post you will find below the list and contact details of the Association of Licensed Tourist Guides (guides who speak English and work in Athens).

Georges taxi is simply a fleet of taxis -- started by a taxi driver named George who was promoted to the HILT by Matt Barrett's Greece website for 20 years, and is now a afleet of scores of taaxis, but they are onoly DRIVERS< not licensed GUIDES> THey cannot accompany you into an anacient site or church or museum, they just hand you a little folder & yo u are on your own. Unless you are personally well-versed in ancient Greece history/architecture/archeology, you need a LICENSED Guide. Please do not fall for the hype of a highpriced taxi.
We really liked Nadia Pavlikaki. She took us on a tour of the Acropolis and Ancient Agora, but she also does other tours. Two days later, we saw her doing a tour in the Acropolis museum.

Thanks Susanna, for a personal recommend of a LICENSED Guide... so useful!
