While there are numerous guides all over Athens one can do it on your own with a good guide book, internet research and asking questions on various travel forums.
Most of what everyone goes to Athens for is in a relatively small area, making it very easy to walk from one destination to another.
It all depends on your budget, comfort level and convenience. With two teenagers it may be a lot easier doing-it-yourself, going at your own pace, discovering not only the tourist areas but the many out-of-the-way areas of the city.
Areas to consider are:
Anafiotika
Central Markets
Psiri District
Kerimikos Cemetery
Main tourists areas:
Syngtagma Square
Monistiraki Square
Plaka District
How much time you have for your full day will determine what to see and obviously your stamina. July will be HOT (usually) so take a lot of water, go at your own pace and try to get as early a start as possible.
The Acropolis is best visited when it opens, 8 a.m., to avoid tour groups and tourists. The rest of the sites can be visited throughout the day.
