Athens + one Island week before Memorial Day?

If you were going to Athens mid-may and wanted to get a peak of the islands...which one would you choose at this time of year?
Would love a island that is pretty lively with lots to do aside from the beach since it may not be that warm.
I prefer to fly than take a boat....(I don't always do well on boats...although I won't write off a place just because of that)

Thank you!

There are lots of lively islands with airports that would work. I love Santorini but you can also fly to Naxos, Paros, Samos, Milos, Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos, Crete, Corfu, Skiathos, Lesvos and Chios, to name some, but it really depends on your preferences.

Thanks for the reply!

I will most likely be coming from Germany and going to Istanbul after if this helps.
I am a bit concerned about the weather/the island being lively also.

If you fly to Rhodes, Kos, Chios, Samos or Lesvos you can take advantage of the ferries that connect those Greek islands with the Turkish mainland. If you have any desire to see Ephesus then the island to choose is Samos.

Mid-may is still off-season but things will start to be happening, especially on any of the larger islands. Since you will be going to Turkey then Lesbos, Rhodes and other islands in that part of the Aegean would be fine. Larger islands tend not to rely so much on tourism so most shops, tavernas and businesses will be open. Lesbos and Rhodes both have airports.
