I read online that Athens metro has implemented a contactless payment system (Tap2ride). Could anyone who has used it please confirm that I can simply tap my phone at the metro fare gate to pay for ticket with Apple Pay (credit card), without the need to buy ticket at the machine or ticket office. I plan to use this method to take the M3 train from the airport to Syntagma station, then change to the M2 train to reach Acropoli. Thanks in advance!
Yes you can, I live in Athens & see people do it daily plus some visiting friends have opted to do this instead of a ticket :) It also applies on buses, trams & trolleys should you need to use one during your stay.
@salnav:
I'll be visiting Greece for the first time next month and am looking forward to the tour!
Thanks for your confirmation, really appreciate it!
Just a bit of extra info for you & others, if there’s more than one of you you can’t put more than one ticket on a card, you each need to use a different card.
An old person question, can you just tap your credit card rather than Apple Pay?
Yes Susan, no problem! Visa or Mastercard because I also forgot to mention that American Express is not widely accepted anywhere in Greece, the two I mention are accepted everywhere.
I believe if you are a senior citizen and want a lower cost for a ticket you cannot do so by tapping your Credit Card or phone.
Just to add, as you've probably read, with this system you'll pay a maximum daily fare of €4.10 (the cost of a 24-hour ticket), regardless of the number of journeys during the day, instead of paying €1.20 for each trip, the price of a paper ticket.
As JoLui says but does not include airport trips, that is still the set fare of bus at €5.50 & metro at €9, should you want to take advantage of the reduced fare for seniors you will have to get a ticket from the booths & show your passport, many don’t bother to save a few euros & opt for the convenience of just tapping & travelling.

Do this to Yoda and centenarians like me how can they ?!
Mindfulness:
To get the senior discount you'll have to buy a ticket direct from a kiosk.
There is (or was) a ticket counter at the airport Airport Metro station. You tell then you want a senior discount and depending on how "old" you look they may ask for some type of ID.
Same is true at any ticket counter in Athens.
Mindfulness, I answered how to get the reduced ticket in the post before yours :)
