Athens in Dec

Hi! We are looking to travel to Athens around Christmas time. Wondering if it would be a good idea to go that time of the year? Also, could we add an island as well? And how may days would be good to plan a trip? Thanks!

Average temp on Santorini in Dec is upper 50s.; expect other islands not much different.
Athens is a bit cooler.

If you don't mind the temps, no reason not to go.

I would expect islands to be 'quiet' and fewer choices of activities and restaurants.

How many days is dependent on what you want to do.

We always used to go for Christmas and New Year. It’s a nice time of the year to be there: there are less crowds and a festive atmosphere. The weather can vary a lot and we’ve occasionally had snow on the mainland but have also had sunny days when it’s warm enough to swim in sheltered places.

If you are keen on doing an island I would consider Crete, the most southerly and sunniest. If I were you though I’d think about somewhere on the mainland. Nafplio, which a lot of people here like, is ideal. It’s close to Athens but a small and beautiful town with good restaurants. The big advantage is that you don’t need to worry about the winds getting up and delaying ferries. We always use the KTEL bus to get to Nafplio. It’s under 3 hours and an easy trip.
