Hello, We will be in Athens post cruise in late May. We enjoy a boutique hotel as opposed to a larger chain.. Breakfast included is a plus. Any help is appreciated. Also wonder if taxi is the best way to travel from the port? There will be 4 adults. Thanks.
Why would you want to be located in the Plaka? In Athens, we prefer to stay in Kolonaki.
thanks, Suki, I was told that by a friend who just returned. I understand you can walk everywhere and that's our preference.
Taxis are the best way to get to the city from the cruise port. (Cost: around €30 depending on traffic)
If there are four of you, each with large luggage, it might be a bit tight with a taxi in a regular car.
I don't know if you'll find a taxi with a minivan when you disembark at the port. Perhaps pre-booking would be more convenient and smarter.
Don't forget to specify that pickup is at the cruise port, not the ferry port.
Thanks, JoLui
The Electra Palace is wonderful. Amazing breakfast with amazing view. Don’t forget to get Acropolis tickets regardless of the time of year, if you plan on going.
Acropolis View Hotel. Great location, great view, completely renovated inside.
Plaka is an awesome place to stay. We liked the Hotel Phaedra for an unassuming quiet hotel, with an amazing view of the Acropolis and perfectly situated for the sights in the area.
Thanks for the hotel recommendations everyone! I will check them out.
We really enjoyed our stay at AVA Hotel and Suites, recommended by someone on this forum. We stayed in a room with views of Hadrian's Arch and the Acropolis. The balcony was awesome. It also had a little kitchenette, great A/C, wonderful breakfast, and kind staff. It is steps away from all the action, but doesn't feel like a busy area, because it is on a little side street. It is one of the favorite places that I have stayed.
We also stayed at the Hera Hotel as part of the RS tour. It is about a 10 minute walk from the AVA. The lower priced rooms were perfectly adequate, with good A/C and breakfast, but very small and a little dark. If you do look at staying at the Hera, the upgrade to a balcony room is well worth it, with a beautiful view of the acropolis.
Plaka is great but staying in Monastiraki or Koukaki is just as good imo (they're immediately adjacent to Plaka), and easier to get in and out
If you're only staying a day or two in Athens to visit the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the Acropolis Museum, Plaka is probably a good option.
But all the other neighborhoods mentioned above—Kolonaki, Koukaki, and Monastiraki—are equally good and worth considering if you want to do/see more.
I would add the neighborhoods of Thissio, Makrygianni, and Historic Athens.
All these neighborhoods are suitable for a tourist stay, and each has its own specificities to consider when choosing a place to stay.
Hotel Hera. We've stayed here twice. Walkable to Acropolis, metro and plaza.
Pre-book a taxi from port to hotel. We used Welcome Pickups.
We enjoyed the AthenWas Design Hotel which is a boutique hotel, and you can choose a room with breakfast included. It is on a quiet pedestrian street only a couple of blocks from the Acropolis and is an easy walk to restaurants and the Plaka area. Our room had a balcony. AthensWas has a rooftop restaurant with views of the Acropolis.
We also made a reservation with Welcome Pickups which worked well.
